1:00 PM Road Scholar: GIs in Britain

Join us Monday, November 24, 2025, at 1 p.m. for a free virtual lecture to learn about GIs in Britain during World War II.  No registration is required.

Road Scholar is a leading not-for-profit educational travel organization providing learning opportunities for older adults. This event is a virtual lecture led by historian Ruth Polling.

During World War II, the arrival of over a million American servicemen in Britain sparked both cultural exchange and social tensions. Historian Ruth Polling examines how the presence of GIs reshaped British communities, from friendships and alliances to moments of friction. This free lecture will explore the everyday encounters that revealed striking cultural differences — whether in attitudes toward dating, spending or social customs — and the challenges of two nations adjusting to life side by side in wartime.
